Why Your Patients Aren't Sticking to the Plan
Every chiropractor has faced the perplexing question of why some patients either don't return for follow-up care or forego the treatment plan. When nearly 20% of patients drop out mid-treatment, understanding the reasons behind this can be pivotal for both the patient and your practice's long-term success.
On this episode of Chiropractical, Host Jon Kec is joined by Dr. Tom Ventimiglia, a retired chiropractor of almost 40 years, to discuss the unseen factors affecting patient adherence to treatment plans.
Understanding Patient Retention
- Contributing factors can often be more psychosocial than biological
- Patients need to be understood holistically, considering their life circumstances
While treatment plans may be clinically sound, they often overlook real-life barriers. There should be an emphasis on seeing the patient as a whole person. Factors like transportation and family obligations may seem small, but they play significant roles in a patient's ability to adhere to a treatment plan.
Improving Communication and Empowerment
- Empower patients through active listening and understanding
- Set SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals
It is a necessity to build true partnerships with patients. Open-ended questions should be asked which will help establish a dialogue that goes beyond the surface level of symptoms. This enhances the provider-patient relationship, fostering a greater sense of collaboration.
Setting SMART goals can be impactful as small wins build momentum and aid in making the treatment journey more manageable.
The Role of Technology & AI
- Address AI and web-based advice with patients directly
- Ensure you are the "Trusted Guide"
Today's patients have another voice in the treatment room with them, technology and A.I. While that can be a great resource, there is still a risk of reading misinformation. Chiropractors must step as trusted guides, clarifying misconceptions and reinforcing their value in a crowded health information space.
Understanding and addressing the psychosocial aspects of a patient's life is as crucial as treating their physical ailments. By listening, communicating effectively, and setting realistic goals, chiropractors can help ensure patients adhere to the treatment plan.
