Serving Those Who Served: How Chiropractic Serves Veterans

On this episode of Chiropractical, Host Jon Kec talks with Dr. Anthony Lisi, the VA's National Chiropractic Program Director, about how chiropractic care has become an essential part of veteran healthcare. Learn how this growing program is improving lives and creating new opportunities for chiropractors to serve those who've served.

When it comes to caring for those who have served, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is continually expanding its approach to whole-person health. One of the most impactful additions to that mission? Chiropractic care.

In this episode of Chiropractical, host Jon Kec sits down with Dr. Anthony Lisi, National Chiropractic Program Director for the VA, to explore how chiropractic became an essential part of veteran healthcare, and what opportunities lie ahead for doctors of chiropractic nationwide.

From Small Beginnings to a National Program

Chiropractic care officially became part of the VA system in 1999 and a covered benefit in 2004. Since then, it has grown from a handful of clinics to over 500 chiropractors across 100+ VA facilities, with even more serving veterans through the VA Community Cares program.

This expansion means more veterans have access to natural solutions for issues like back pain, neck pain, and mobility challenges. Beyond treating pain, chiropractic care supports the VA’s commitment to whole-person wellness, helping veterans move better, feel better, and live better.

A Conversation with Dr. Anthony Lisi

Few people understand this evolution like Dr. Lisi. He’s witnessed firsthand how the role of chiropractic has shifted, from a pilot project to an integrated healthcare model.

Today, chiropractors in the VA work side-by-side with physicians, physical therapists, and mental health professionals. This collaborative care environment not only benefits patients but also creates powerful learning opportunities for medical residents and chiropractic trainees alike.

And the data speaks for itself: research within the VA has shown chiropractic care can reduce opioid reliance, improve function, and enhance quality of life for veterans.

Opportunities for Chiropractors to Serve

For chiropractors inspired by service, the VA offers multiple ways to get involved:

  • Work within the VA system as a staff chiropractor.
  • Partner through Community Cares, offering services to veterans in private practice settings.
  • Apply for a VA chiropractic residency, which has grown from 5 to 19 nationwide programs.

These residencies give new graduates hands-on experience treating complex cases and working within interdisciplinary teams—a rare opportunity to build skills that make a lasting impact.

Healing Those Who Served

At its core, this story is about more than healthcare—it’s about honor and service. Chiropractic’s role in the VA reflects the profession’s dedication to helping those who’ve given so much for our country.

As Dr. Lisi reminds us, that the impact of the profession elevates our ability to continue to serve veterans and expand the profession.”

For chiropractors, that’s a powerful call to action. It empowers those to continue serving and leading within this evolving system.
