As a DC, you often see patients with serious injuries and illnesses that prevent them from working. Have you considered what would happen if YOU suffered a disabling injury or illness?

Chiropractic is such an active profession. You need to be mobile to adjust patients. An injury or illness means you could be out of work—and a paycheck—for an extended period of time.
Long term disability insurance can help.
Thousands of DCs have secured it to help protect their ability to earn an income just in case. They’ll receive monthly benefits in the event of a covered disability. But others have heard myths, and decided to forego this important type of insurance. Let’s clear a few things up.
Myth: Disability insurance is too expensive
Truth: Group rates help make it affordable
If you’ve looked for disability insurance, you may have encountered coverage suitable for a wide range of professions. To cover all of these varied risks, the rates may be higher than you’re able and willing to pay.
Luckily, a group disability insurance plan would base rates on similar risks. This means more affordable rates for the entire group.
Myth: Chiropractic care is always considered a preexisting condition
Truth: Not all disability insurance plans treat chiropractic care as a preexisting condition
Some disability insurance companies may not understand the nature of chiropractic care, and just how important preventive care is to maintain health. Under these plans, chiropractic care may be considered a preexisting condition, and exclude or limit coverage for a certain period of time.
This is certainly not the case with all disability insurance plans, especially one specifically for chiropractors. It’s important to look for one that understands the importance of routine, preventive maintenance care and doesn’t treat it as a preexisting condition.
Myth: Applying for disability insurance is a hassle
Truth: It’s easy to get a quote and apply online right now
It’s true that applying for disability insurance was often more cumbersome years ago. You’d request and complete a paper application, and mail it back to start the process. Or, you had to go through an agent to get the ball rolling
That’s all changed. Many companies make it extremely easy to get a quote and apply online. You just have to know where to look. In addition, a medical exam may not even be required, depending on the plan and your health.
Myth: Disability insurance geared to chiropractors is hard to find
Truth: Coverage specifically for DCs is readily available
When you look online, there are many different disability insurance options available. As a DC, you want one that fits your unique needs instead of a cookie-cutter plan that will work for most of the population. Finding the right one can seem daunting.
