The D.C. Long Term Disability Insurance Plan, issued by The Prudential Insurance Company of America, is not meant to be a one-size-fits-all plan for the needs of every profession. Instead, it includes benefits to meet the unique needs of Doctors of Chiropractic.
The information below provides answers to initial questions you may have about your eligibility and benefits. For valuable answers to additional questions, see Frequently Asked Questions.
Who is eligible?
This plan is for members of the National Business Association for Chiropractors (NBAC) only. If you're not currently a member, you may sign up for membership on the application.
As a member, you are eligible to apply if you are under age 60, working at least 30 hours per week and reside in the U.S.
How much coverage is available?
Monthly benefit amounts from $500 to $7,500 are available. To help make sure you choose the right amount for your needs, click here.
How long will I receive benefits?
While some disabilities may last only a few weeks, others may last months, or even years. The D.C. Long Term Disability Insurance Plan can pay you monthly benefits all the way to age 65.
Do I have to be able to work in any occupation to receive disability benefits?
The D.C. Long Term Disability Insurance Plan supports your chiropractic profession. You will receive benefits for two years if you are unable to practice chiropractic due to your disability. If you remain disabled after two years, you will receive benefits to age 65 if you cannot perform the duties of any gainful occupation for which you are qualified.
Can I collect benefits if I am disabled but still working?
Yes. We understand you may be partially disabled and still able to work part-time. In that case, you can still receive a portion of your monthly benefit amount.
How soon will I collect monthly benefits?
You choose how soon you receive monthly benefits—after 90 or 180 days of continuous disability. (This is called the Elimination Period.) Before deciding, consider your personal finances and how long you can cover your bills without your regular income.
When will my coverage start?
Your coverage under the D.C. Long Term Disability Insurance Plan will begin on the first day of the month after you have been approved and have paid the first premium, as long as you are working at least 30 hours a week. (If you are not working at least 30 hours a week, coverage will start the first of the month after you resume working at least 30 hours a week.)
What if the plan is not what I expected?
The D.C. Long Term Disability Insurance Plan comes with a satisfaction guarantee. Once you receive your Certificate of Coverage, read it over carefully. If the plan does not meet your expectations, return it within 30 days of receipt. Any premiums paid will be refunded to you.
