Extra Benefits

The D.C. Group Term Life Insurance Plan, issued by The Prudential Insurance Company of America, offers you valuable benefits and features, including benefit options in the event of a diagnosis of a chronic or terminal illness.

Accelerated Payment of Death Benefits

If you or your Spouse/Domestic Partner are diagnosed as terminally ill with a life expectancy of 6 months or less, you may choose to receive part of your benefit amount upfront. The Accelerated Payment of Death Benefits Option allows you to receive up to 90% of the benefit amount, up to a maximum $100,000.

In addition, if you as the member, are diagnosed as Chronically Ill, where you are incapable of performing at least 2 Activities of Daily Living for at least 90 days or have severe cognitive impairment, you may receive up to 45% of your benefit amount up to a maximum of $50,000.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) Coverage

You, your covered Spouse/Domestic Partner and Child(ren) will have built-in AD&D coverage. If you die or incur a covered injury as the result of an accident, you or your beneficiary will receive benefits. Ask for details, or see your policy. Exclusions do apply for the AD&D coverage.

Accelerated Payment of Death Benefits Option is a feature that is made available to group life insurance participants. It is not a health, nursing home, or long-term care insurance benefit and is not designed to eliminate the need for those types of insurance coverage. The death benefit is reduced by the amount of the accelerated death benefit paid. There is no administrative fee to accelerate benefits.  Receipt of accelerated death benefits may affect eligibility for public assistance and may be taxable.  The federal income tax treatment of payments made under this rider depends upon whether the insured is the recipient of the benefits and is considered terminally ill or chronically ill.  You may wish to seek professional tax advice before exercising this option.

The AD&D policy provides ACCIDENT insurance only.  It does NOT provide basic hospital, basic medical, or major medical insurance as defined by the New York State Department of Financial Services.
