The D.C. Disability Insurance Plan provides valuable benefits you'll need if you become totally disabled, including:

Two Elimination Periods Available

You decide when you want to receive benefits from the D.C. Long Term Disability Plan – after 90 or 180 days. Monthly benefits will be paid after the Elimination Period you choose.

“Own Occupation” Protection for 2 Years –
Benefit Period to Age 65 and Beyond

You’ll collect benefits for up to two full years if your Total Disability prevents you from working as a D.C. Then, for the remainder of your disability, you can collect benefits if you’re unable to work in any occupation for which your education reasonably qualifies you. These benefits will be paid all the way to your retirement age as determined by the Social Security Act or longer, depending on your age at the time of your disability.

Survivor Income Benefit

If you die while receiving monthly benefits or after the Elimination Period, a Survivor Income Benefit of 6 times your last monthly benefit amount will be paid. This will be payable to the beneficiary you designate or if no beneficiary has been designated, to your surviving spouse, your surviving children or your estate, in that order.

Recurrent Disability Benefit

If, during the Elimination Period, you are no longer Totally Disabled and return to work for 30 days or less, your Elimination Period will not be interrupted. So, if you become Totally Disabled again due to the same condition, you do not have to start your Elimination Period over.

In addition, if you become Totally Disabled within 6 months of previously being Totally Disabled, it will be considered one period of disability and you will not have to go through the Elimination Period before collecting benefits.

Waiver of Premium Provision

If you are Totally Disabled and your Elimination Period has passed, you will not have to pay the premiums for your coverage. This waiver of premium will continue until benefits are no longer payable.

Rehabilitative Employment Benefit

The Hartford understands you may be ready to return to work on a limited basis while you’re disabled and receiving monthly benefits. But, chances are, you won’t earn your pre-disability income. The D.C. Long Term Disability Plan’s Rehabilitative Employment Benefit lets you earn an income while you’re disabled and still receive partial monthly disability benefits.
